Annappa (Name Changed)

Native Place: Mangalore

Age:  19 years

Family background: One elder brother and three elder sisters

Occupation: Cleaner in Hotel

Current place of Residence: Shanti Nagar, Bangalore

Before Sampoorna

Annappa studied in his native Mangalore till 6th standard. Financial constraints forced him to discontinue studies and work as a cleaner in a hotel. As the hotel was far, he began staying in the hotel with other guys in one room. He visited his house only at the end of the week after taking permission. Soon Annappa began to get exposed to different types of sexual activities and started indulging in them. Annappa’s sexual interest increased and he began having homosexual relations. One day, he and his friend decided to shift to Bangalore to earn more and began working as cleaners in Shanthi Nagar. They were content to spend their earnings on movies and visiting parks. Soon, Annappa started having sexual relations with an unknown contacts in Cubbon Park during his holidays. After that incident, he used to spend his holidays in Cubbon Park indulging in sexual activities. Many a time, he did not use condoms.  During one such visit, Annappa met with the field staff of Project Sampoorna who motivated him to visit the office for counselling and testing.

After Sampoorna

During his visit to the office, Annappa was counselled about the risks of unsafe sexual relations, and the reasons for his vulnerability to contract HIV/AIDS and STI/STD disease. The condom demo helped him to learn about its proper usage. After testing his blood for HIV, Ajay was also examined by the doctor of OPD (Out-Patient Department). Fortunately, he did not have any STD and his blood indicated HIV negative.

The post-test counselling helped Annappa to understand the importance of safe sexual relations and working with commitment so that he can progress in his work place.   The Project Counsellor also suggested Annappa to visit the office during holidays for getting exposure to healthy habits and recreational indoor games.
